The South-Pointing Chariot as a Mechanical Direction-Preservation Engine
תוכן האובייקטים עצמם כתוב באנגלית ועדיין לא תורגם.
- תקופה ומקור
- China, associated with Ma Jun in the third century CE, with fuller Song-period descriptions of later constructions
- מה הוא נבנה לעשות
- To keep a pointer aimed at a fixed world direction while the vehicle carrying it turns.
- כיצד המנגנון פועל
- Vehicle yaw follows from the difference between left and right wheel rotation. A correcting mechanism produces an equal and opposite rotation of the pointer, so the world-frame direction stays invariant. Several mechanical families satisfy this; some use selective engagement during fixed-radius turns, modern replicas often a differential.
- קלט
- Left and right wheel rotation, and one externally set initial direction.
- טרנספורמציה
- Differencing the two wheel rotations to recover yaw, then negating it at the pointer.
- פלט
- A direction held constant in the world frame for as long as the mechanism tracks without slip.
- מה מבוסס בראיות
- שחזור: קריאה סבירה, כשקיימים שחזורים מתחרים ברשומות.
- מה הוא מדגים
- That this is not magnetism. The direction must be given to the machine once and is then propagated mechanically, so error accumulates - and that historical existence and exact mechanism are separate questions.
