To automate the selection of warp threads, so that a long control sequence lives in a replaceable medium rather than in the loom.

A chain of punched cards encodes a Boolean matrix. At each pick, one card row determines which warp threads are raised. The loom and the weaver supply cyclic motion and weft insertion; the Jacquard head supplies the selection logic.
